Instructions for a repair workshop
1A community workshop invites beginners to repair small wooden boxes. On the first morning, the instruction sheet contains a long paragraph with several unfamiliar terms. The instructions are so complicated that some beginners cannot decide which step comes first. The problem is not a lack of tools: each table already has the tools it needs.
2For the next session, Hana replaces the paragraph with short numbered steps. She gives the group such clear instructions that the beginners can start without asking which step comes first. They still ask questions about how to hold particular tools. Clear instructions help them begin; they do not remove every need for help.
3The room is noisy, so Hana speaks slowly and points to each number. A volunteer writes, 'She gives so clear instructions that everyone can repair any box alone.' Hana notices two problems. The phrase before instructions needs a different structure, and the claim about repairing any box alone goes beyond what the group has demonstrated.
