A recording interrupted for a check
1Before a community interview, Min remembers to test the recorder. She presses the record button, speaks a short sentence, and plays it back. The test works. Later, when a colleague asks whether the equipment was checked, she remembers testing it before the guest arrived. The same test can be described as a task she did not forget and as an earlier event she recalls.
2During the interview, the recorder makes an unusual sound. Min stops recording and asks the guest to wait. She has not decided to abandon the interview. She stops to check the cable, discovers that it is loose, and reconnects it. After a short test, she resumes recording. The pause separates an interrupted activity from the action performed during the interruption.
3That evening, Min writes two notes. The first says that she remembered to test the recorder before the interview. The second says that she stopped recording to check a loose cable during it. A colleague changes the second note to 'She stopped checking the cable to record.' Min rejects the revision because it reverses which action was interrupted and which action was the purpose of the pause.
