Preparing the labels for a small exhibition
1A volunteer is checking the labels for an exhibition of handmade models. A list of the models is on the desk. The list gives the name of each object and its maker. Several copies of the list are near the entrance so that visitors can carry one while walking through the room.
2One of the labels is missing a date. The other labels are complete. The volunteer with two assistants checks the information against the maker's notes. The assistants who prepare the display cards work at a separate table. They do not make decisions about dates without checking the notes.
3The volunteer's first draft reads, 'A list of the models are on the desk.' She has allowed the nearby plural noun models to distract her from list. Before printing, she places brackets around of the models and checks the main subject again. A useful final check links each verb to its own subject, rather than simply to the nearest noun.
