A different place for the display
1A student club planned to show its paper models in the school courtyard. The members had checked the forecast, and no rain was expected. However, on the morning of the event, the wind became strong. Several light models fell over during a short test. The club moved the display indoors because of the strong wind. It did not cancel the event, and the models were not damaged.
2The new room had large windows. After the move, visitors found the labels easier to read because the room was bright. This was a useful benefit, but it was not the reason for the original decision. The club had chosen the indoor location to protect the models from the wind, before anyone commented on the labels. Mina wrote both facts in her report and kept their roles separate.
3There was another change that afternoon. The main gate was locked for maintenance, so visitors entered through the side gate. A volunteer first wrote that they used the side gate because of the rain. Mina corrected the report: the day had remained dry, and the locked main gate was the relevant cause. She noticed that a sentence could be grammatically complete and still give the wrong explanation. To check her final report, she asked two questions about each sentence: Does the expression after because or because of have the right structure, and does the passage actually connect this cause with this result?
