Who did the work?
1A photography club was preparing a small exhibition. Its old camera sometimes produced unclear images, and the members could not repair its internal parts safely. They booked a visit to a repair shop. On Monday, the club had the camera repaired by a technician. The technician replaced a damaged part and tested the equipment. The students watched the final test but did not perform the repair themselves.
2The club also needed labels for the photographs. This time, the members did the work themselves. They printed the labels on a school printer and attached them to the display boards. By Tuesday afternoon, they had attached every label. Their report therefore described two different arrangements: a service carried out by another person and work completed by the members. The presence of the word had in both descriptions did not make the roles identical.
3Before the exhibition opened, the technician offered another inspection. The club will have the camera checked again next month. The students will bring the camera to the shop, and the technician will inspect it. One member initially wrote that the club had checked the camera on Monday. The others corrected the sentence because their own check was not what had happened. They wanted their report to identify both the person who arranged the work and the person who actually carried it out. Correct word order helped them preserve that distinction without describing every step of the repair.
